An estimate, not a pre-approval or financial advice. It uses the lower of two limits: a repayment of about 30% of gross income (a common rule of thumb), and the money left after your debt and living costs. Each bank runs its own affordability assessment under the National Credit Act, checks your credit record, and may lend more or less. Transfer and bond costs are estimated from the SARS transfer duty table, the conveyancing fee guideline (1 July 2026) plus VAT, and Deeds Office fees (1 April 2026).

How to borrow more, safely

  • Pay off small debts first. A R1,500 store card instalment you clear can lift your possible loan by about R148,000 at prime over 20 years.
  • Apply together. Two incomes on one application raise both limits.
  • Save a deposit. It adds to your price range and banks often offer a better rate with one.
  • Fix your credit record. Check it free and dispute errors before you apply.
