Tax season 2026 is open — here are the dates that matter:
- 1–12 July 2026: SARS sends auto-assessment notices by SMS/email to around 6 million taxpayers with simple tax affairs. If yours is correct, you do nothing — and any refund pays out automatically, typically within 72 hours if your banking details are in order
- 13 July – 23 October 2026: filing window for individual (non-provisional) taxpayers who weren’t auto-assessed or who need to correct their auto-assessment
- 13 July 2026 – 22 January 2027: window for provisional taxpayers (freelancers, rental/business income); trusts file from 19 September 2026
No notification by 12 July? You weren’t auto-assessed — prepare to file from 13 July. And don’t visit a SARS branch during the auto-assessment period; everything below happens online.
First: do you even need to file?
If you earn a single salary with PAYE deducted, no other income, and you’re auto-assessed correctly — SARS has genuinely done it for you. Review, confirm your banking details are right, done.
You do need to file (or correct your auto-assessment) if you have: income the auto-assessment missed (rental, freelance/side hustle, second job), deductions to claim that aren’t reflected (retirement annuity contributions, out-of-pocket medical expenses, home office where eligible, travel against an allowance), or anything on the assessment that’s simply wrong. Filing when you have deductions to claim is how refunds happen — skipping it leaves your money with SARS.
Got an auto-assessment? Do this (10 minutes)
- Verify the notice is real — SARS never asks for passwords, OTPs, PINs or banking logins by SMS/email. Real notices direct you to eFiling or the MobiApp, not to “click here to claim your refund” links. When in doubt, ignore the message and log in directly
- Log into eFiling (www.sars.gov.za) or the SARS MobiApp and open the assessment (you can also check status via the SARS Online Query System → “My Auto Assessment Status”)
- Check every line: employer income (IRP5), medical aid, retirement contributions, investment income — auto-assessments are built from third-party data, and missing data means a wrong assessment that’s still your responsibility
- Agree? Do nothing. Refund (if due) arrives automatically; if you owe, arrange payment by the due date on the notice
- Disagree or something’s missing? File a corrected return — auto-assessed taxpayers generally have until 23 October 2026 to submit corrections
(Small print worth knowing: refunds or debts under R100 roll over to next year rather than paying out.)
Never used eFiling? Registering and filing your first return
Register (once): go to www.sars.gov.za → eFiling → Register. You’ll need your ID number, personal details, and to pass verification. If you’ve ever worked with PAYE deducted, you almost certainly already have a tax number — the registration process links to it (retrieve a lost tax number via the SARS Online Query System). The SARS MobiApp (Android/iOS/Huawei) does everything a first-time filer needs.
Gather before you file — in short:
- IRP5/IT3(a) from each employer (usually pre-loaded)
- Medical aid tax certificate + records of out-of-pocket medical costs
- Retirement annuity contribution certificate
- IT3(b)/IT3(c) investment certificates from banks/brokers
- Travel logbook if you receive a travel allowance
- Side income records and deductible expenses if you freelance

File:
- Log in → Returns → your ITR12 for the 2026 tax year
- Answer the opening questionnaire honestly — it builds the right form
- Much is pre-populated — verify rather than assume, then add what’s missing
- Submit. Your ITA34 assessment notice arrives, showing refund, amount due, or square
- Selected for verification? Normal, not an accusation. Upload the requested documents via eFiling promptly and keep originals for five years
The deadlines and the consequences
Miss 23 October 2026 (non-provisional) and administrative penalties accrue monthly until you file — plus interest on unpaid tax. If you’re behind from previous years, file those too; penalties keep running on every outstanding return, and SARS’s data-matching now catches non-filers rather than forgetting them. Filing late is expensive; filing wrong is fixable; not filing is the only truly bad option.
⚠️ Scam season = tax season
Every filing season brings a phishing wave. The rules: SARS never requests credentials or card details via email/SMS/calls; refund links in messages are fake; “SARS agents” demanding immediate payment via voucher or instant transfer are criminals. Verify anything suspicious by logging into eFiling directly or calling SARS on 0800 00 7277. Forward phishing to phishing@sars.gov.za.
FAQ
How long do refunds take?
Auto-assessment refunds: typically within 72 hours of the assessment if banking details are verified. Filed returns: usually days, unless selected for verification — then after documents are reviewed.
I earn below the tax threshold — must I file?
Often not, if you’re under the filing thresholds with simple affairs. But if PAYE was deducted or you have deductions, filing can recover money. When unsure, check SARS’s “do you need to file” criteria or file anyway.
I have a side hustle on top of my salary — am I provisional?
Extra income beyond salary generally makes you a provisional taxpayer, with the 22 January 2027 deadline and advance payments during the year.
Can I fix a mistake after submitting?
Yes — request a correction on eFiling and refile.
