The essentials: the old SASSA Gold Card is being retired and replaced by the Postbank Black Card. The final deadline to swap is Monday 31 August 2026, and SASSA has confirmed swaps can be done over the weekend. Take your ID document and your old Gold Card to an official swap point — the replacement is free, and your grant itself is not affected. If you already receive your grant into your own bank account, none of this applies to you.
Postbank has stated the deadline will not be extended. According to SASSA, fewer than 80,000 beneficiaries were still on gold cards in the final week, with the Western and Eastern Cape holding the highest remaining numbers. This changeover has caused enormous confusion — and, predictably, a wave of scams. Here’s what’s actually happening and exactly what to do.
Why the card is changing
Grant payments moved to Postbank (the state bank) as paymaster, and the ageing Gold Card infrastructure is being replaced with Postbank’s own Black Card. Your grant, its amount, and your entitlement do not change — only the card in your pocket does. Think of it as the bank replacing an expired card, at national scale.
Who needs to act
- ✅ You collect any SASSA grant with a Gold Card → swap by 31 August 2026
- ❌ You receive your grant into your own bank account (Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank) → nothing to do
- ❌ You collect SRD at a retailer with ID + cellphone → nothing to do
- ❌ You already have the Black Card → done; ignore any SMS telling you to “re-verify”
How to swap, step by step
- Take your green ID book or Smart ID and your old Gold Card (a lost Gold Card doesn’t block you — report it to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and you’ll be issued a Black Card as the replacement)
- Go to an official swap point. Postbank has set up desks inside selected retailers including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and SPAR, as well as Postbank service points, Post Office branches and mobile units in rural areas
- Find your nearest active site by dialling *120*355# on your phone and following the prompts, or call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 before you travel
- Your identity is verified and the Black Card is issued — free of charge. No forms to complete, and you can collect in any province regardless of where your grant was approved
- Your grant pays onto the new card from the next cycle. Test it with a balance check before payday
If you can’t travel because of disability or age, a family member or registered procurator can swap on your behalf — but they need a power of attorney or a SASSA-issued procurator letter.

What happens if you miss the deadline
Missing the swap does not cancel your grant — your entitlement is safe. But your old card stops working, which means you cannot access your money until you complete the swap. Practically: money delayed, extra trips, a difficult month. Postbank has said there will be no grace period.
If your gold card has already stopped working, the fix is the same as the swap above — go to a swap point with your ID, collect the Black Card, and your accumulated grant money becomes accessible. Nothing is lost; it is waiting for you.
A better long-term option to consider: having your grant paid into a bank account in your own name (several banks offer low-fee accounts suitable for grant recipients). It removes card-swap drama permanently and gives you a bank statement — useful for everything from appeals to opening accounts. Compare options in our cheapest bank accounts guide.
⚠️ Scam alert — this changeover is a scammer’s dream
Circulating scams right now include: SMSes with a “swap link” — there is no online swap, it is an in-person process, so any link is phishing. “Agents” offering home swaps for a fee — no such service exists, and the swap is always free. Calls asking for your card number, PIN or OTP “to transfer your grant to the new card” — SASSA and Postbank will never ask for these. If anyone demands money to exchange your card, do not pay, and report it immediately on 0800 60 10 11.
FAQ
Does the swap cost anything?
No. The replacement is free. You only need a valid South African ID or temporary ID document. Anyone charging you is running a scam.
Will my grant amount change?
No. The card changes; the grant, the amount and your entitlement stay exactly the same.
Can I swap in a different province from where I applied?
Yes. Cards can be collected in any province regardless of where the grant was approved.
I lost my gold card. Can I still swap?
Yes. Report the loss to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. No replacement gold cards are being issued — you will be given a Black Card instead.
What does the Black Card give me?
Postbank lists three free withdrawals, one free card replacement and a free monthly statement, with accounts protected from unauthorised deductions.
