The short version: if your SRD grant was declined, go to srd.sassa.gov.za, click Appeals, enter your ID number and registered cellphone number, select the month you’re appealing and the reason, and submit. You have 90 days from the date of the decline — miss it and that month’s money is gone for good. Appeals are decided by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) under the Department of Social Development, not by SASSA itself.
A declined status is not the end. Many declines are triggered by automated database checks that got it wrong — a once-off deposit read as income, an outdated UIF record, even a Home Affairs error. The appeal exists precisely because the automated system makes mistakes. Here’s how to use it properly.
Before you appeal: understand why you were declined
Your status check shows a decline reason. Your appeal should answer that specific reason — a generic “please reconsider” appeal is weak. The five common reasons:
1. Means Income Source Identified. SASSA’s bank screening found deposits over R628 in your account during that month’s screening window. If that money wasn’t income — a family member’s money passing through, a gift, a refund, a stokvel payout returning your own savings — your appeal is that the deposit was not regular income. Gather bank statements and, if possible, a note explaining the deposit.
2. Identity Verification Failed. Your details don’t match Home Affairs records. Complete the biometric verification link SASSA sends by SMS, or visit a SASSA office with your ID so they can capture your fingerprints and photo. Then appeal the declined months.
3. Active Alternative Grant. The system believes you already receive another SASSA grant. You cannot get SRD plus another grant — but if this is simply wrong, appeal and contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to investigate the record.
4. UIF Registered. The Department of Labour shows you receiving UIF. If your UIF payments have ended (or never existed), appeal with your UIF status or proof that payments stopped.
5. DHA Registered Death. Home Affairs has a death recorded against your ID number. Don’t only appeal — go to a Home Affairs office urgently with your ID to have the record corrected, because this error blocks far more than your grant.
How to lodge the appeal, step by step
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and find the Appeals section (it links to the DSD appeals portal)
- Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number registered on your application
- You’ll receive an OTP on that number — enter it
- Select the month you are appealing. Each declined month must be appealed separately — if you were declined in March, April and May, that’s three appeals
- Choose the reason for your appeal from the options
- Submit. Note any reference number you’re given
There is no fee. Anyone asking you to pay to “process” or “fast-track” an appeal is a scammer.

What happens after you submit
- The Independent Tribunal (ITSAA) reviews your appeal against the same databases plus anything relevant you’ve raised
- Outcomes are typically communicated within 60 to 90 days, by SMS and on the portal — keep checking your status
- If the appeal succeeds, the month or months are paid into your registered account in a following payment run
- If it fails, the tribunal’s decision is final within this process; your remaining options are correcting the underlying record (Home Affairs, UIF, bank account ownership) and ensuring future months verify cleanly
Mistakes that sink appeals
- Missing the 90 days. The window is counted from each month’s decline, not from when you noticed. Check your status every month.
- Appealing the wrong month — select carefully; the portal lists them.
- Not fixing the root cause. An appeal addresses past months. If your ID record, phone number or bank account is still wrong, next month declines again. Fix both.
- Using a third-party “appeal service.” There are Facebook pages and websites charging to lodge appeals. The portal is free and takes five minutes.
⚠️ Scam warning
Never give your ID number and registered cellphone number to a paid “appeal service” — that exact combination is all someone needs to hijack your grant. SASSA charges nothing to appeal, and no one can fast-track a tribunal decision. Report anyone demanding payment on 0800 60 10 11.
FAQ
Can I appeal if I was declined months ago?
Only within 90 days of each decline. Older months are unfortunately closed — but appeal every recent month that qualifies, and fix the cause going forward.
Do I need documents to appeal?
The portal appeal itself is a simple selection process. But having proof ready (bank statement, UIF letter, Home Affairs confirmation) matters if you’re asked to substantiate, and it guides which reason you select.
My appeal was approved but no money yet?
Approved appeal payments join a subsequent payment batch. Confirm your banking details are current and in your own name, then allow a payment cycle.
Can someone help me appeal?
Yes — a family member can assist, and SASSA offices help in person. Just never hand your details to paid strangers online.
