The fastest way to check your SASSA status: go to srd.sassa.gov.za, enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you applied with, and tap Submit. Your status for the current month appears within seconds — free, no app needed.
That’s the short answer. But if your status says Declined, Referred or Pending — or your money simply hasn’t arrived — the status itself is only half the story. This guide covers every official checking method, what each status actually means, and the exact next step for each one.
Important: We are an independent information site and are not affiliated with SASSA or any government department. We never ask for your details. Only ever enter your ID number on the official portal, srd.sassa.gov.za.
The 4 official ways to check your status
All four are free and pull the same result from SASSA’s system. Use whichever suits your phone and data situation.
1. Online portal (fastest)
- Open srd.sassa.gov.za in any browser
- Find the Application Status section
- Enter your 13-digit ID number
- Enter the cellphone number you used when you applied — this must match exactly
- Tap Submit. Your month-by-month status appears.
2. WhatsApp
- Save 082 046 8553 to your contacts
- Send the word “Status” (or “Hi” to open the menu)
- Reply with your ID number and registered cellphone number when the bot asks
- Your latest result comes back in the chat. Works around the clock, uses very little data.
3. Call centre (free)
Call 0800 60 10 11 and select the SRD option. Free from landlines; open weekdays 08:00–16:00. Expect long waits in the first week of the month. Use this route if your status looks stuck or wrong — an agent can flag issues the portal can’t.
4. USSD
SASSA has offered USSD checking for phones without data (no smartphone needed). USSD codes have changed over time, so confirm the current code on sassa.gov.za before dialling — and never use a code sent to you by SMS from an unknown number.
What each status means — and what to do
| Status | Meaning | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Received, still being verified | Nothing yet. Normal until mid-month; if still Pending after the 20th, call 0800 60 10 11 |
| Approved | You qualify this month | Wait for your pay date to appear, then collect or receive |
| Approved — no pay date | Bank account still being verified | Usually resolves in 7–14 business days. Beyond 3 weeks: call and request a trace |
| Declined | Failed at least one check this month | Read the decline reason, then appeal within 90 days (see below) |
| Referred | A third-party database check (Home Affairs, SARS, UIF) needs review | Usually resolves in batches. If it drags on, visit a SASSA office with your ID |
| No Record Found | ID and phone combination doesn’t match any application | Not a rejection. Re-check your ID digits and use the exact number you applied with |
| Reapplication Required | Your application lapsed | Submit a fresh declaration on the portal |
| Application Already Active | You tried to reapply but you’re already in the system | No action — just check status normally |
Why your status can change every month: unlike other grants, the SRD grant is re-verified before every payment. SASSA automatically checks your bank account against the R628 monthly means test, plus Home Affairs, SARS and UIF records. Approved in May, declined in June is possible — even a once-off deposit from a family member can trigger it. This is why checking monthly matters.
Declined? The 5 real decline reasons and how to appeal
The most common decline codes and what they actually mean:
- Means Income Source Identified — deposits into your account exceeded R628 that month. Appeal with proof the money wasn’t income (a gift, a refund, someone else’s money passing through).
- Identity Verification Failed — your details don’t match Home Affairs records. Complete the biometric verification link SASSA SMSes you, or visit a SASSA office with your ID.
- Active Alternative Grant — the system shows you receiving another SASSA grant. You can’t get SRD plus another grant; if this is wrong, contact SASSA to investigate.
- UIF Registered — the Department of Labour has you down as receiving UIF. If your UIF ended, appeal with proof.
- DHA Registered Death — Home Affairs has recorded a death against your ID. Serious: go to a Home Affairs office urgently with your ID to correct the record.
To appeal: go to srd.sassa.gov.za → Appeals, enter your ID and cellphone number, select the month and the reason, and submit. You have 90 days from the decline — after that the window closes. Appeals are decided by the Independent Tribunal (ITSAA) under the Department of Social Development. Appeal every declined month separately.
📥 Free download: SASSA Grant Tracker — a printable sheet and spreadsheet to track your status, pay dates, decline reasons and appeal deadlines for every month and every family member. One missed deadline is money gone, so write it down. Get the free download → (email required — we send the download link plus a short, useful tip series; unsubscribe anytime).
When you’ll be paid
- Older Person’s, Disability and Children’s grants are paid over the first three business days of the month, in that order, at the 2026/27 amounts (Older Person’s and Disability R2,400; Child Support R580; Foster Child R1,290). Money stays in your account if you collect later.
- SRD R370 is paid later, in batches during roughly the 24th to the end of the month, after the monthly re-verification. No fixed date per person — batches roll out across the window.
- Weekend or public holiday? Payment moves to the next business day.
Good to know for 2026: the SRD grant remains R370 per month and has been funded through to 31 March 2027. And if you still collect with a SASSA Gold Card, it is being replaced by the Postbank Black Card — the final swap deadline is 31 August 2026. See our card swap guide.
⚠️ Protect yourself: SASSA scams are everywhere
- SASSA will never ask for your bank PIN, card number, OTP or a “release fee”
- There are no “SASSA loans” — anyone offering one against your grant is not SASSA
- Only use srd.sassa.gov.za — fake lookalike sites harvest ID numbers
- Report fraud on 0800 60 10 11 or at your nearest SASSA office or police station
FAQ
Can I check someone else’s status?
Yes, with their ID number and registered cellphone number — useful for helping a parent or gogo. Only do it with permission.
Does checking my status cost anything?
No. The portal, WhatsApp line and call centre are all free (WhatsApp uses minimal data; many networks zero-rate government portals).
My status is Approved but I have no money — why?
Usually the pay date simply hasn’t arrived (SRD pays late in the month) or your bank details are still being verified. Check that the bank account is in your own name — third-party accounts are automatically rejected.
Do I need to reapply every month?
No. Once applied, you’re reassessed automatically each month. Duplicate applications can trigger fraud flags.
I changed my phone number — now what?
Update it on srd.sassa.gov.za first. If you’ve lost access to the old number entirely, you’ll need to visit a SASSA office with your ID.
