The pattern, every month: permanent grants are paid over the first three business days of the month — Older Person’s grants first, Disability grants the next day, Children’s grants the day after. There is now also a fourth payment day for beneficiaries flagged for a grant review or eLife Certification. The SRD R370 grant is paid later, in batches during roughly the 24th to the end of the month, after monthly re-verification. If a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it shifts to the next business day.
Once your grant is paid, the money stays in your account — there’s no need to withdraw everything on day one or stand in a queue at dawn. SASSA itself recommends using ATMs or retailers rather than crowding its own pay points on payment day. Collecting on day three is safer, cheaper and calmer.

The fourth payment day — what it means if it’s yours
SASSA has introduced an additional payment day each month for beneficiaries identified for grant reviews or eLife Certification. Reviews are conducted under the Social Assistance Act to confirm continued eligibility, prevent payments to deceased or ineligible people, and detect fraud.
If you were paid on the fourth day, act on it. It means you’ve been flagged for review, and SASSA has warned that failing to complete the process can result in your grant being suspended. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID to complete the review — don’t wait for the suspension to arrive before responding.

Amounts are set in the annual Budget Speech in February and take effect from 1 April. The SRD grant has been funded through to 31 March 2027.
Why the SRD pays “late” — and why your date moves
The SRD grant is re-verified every month against Home Affairs, SARS and UIF records plus your bank account, under the R628 means test. Only after that monthly check do payments release — which is why SRD lands in the last week rather than the first, and why there’s no fixed personal date. Batches roll out across the window; some people are paid on the 24th, others on the 30th, and it can differ month to month. That’s normal, not a problem with your application.
Approved but no pay date showing?
Usually your bank account is still being verified, which takes about 7 to 14 business days after approval. If “Approved” has shown for more than three weeks with no date, call 0800 60 10 11 and request a manual trace.
How you can receive your money
- Bank account — must be in your own name; third-party accounts are automatically rejected

- Retail collection — grants can be drawn at major retailers including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay and Boxer. SASSA actively encourages this over queuing at its own pay points
Changing your payment method or bank details requires an in-person visit to a SASSA office with your ID and bank confirmation letter. It cannot be done by phone or email — and anyone offering to do it for you remotely is running a scam. Changes usually take effect from the next payment cycle.
Money late? Work through this list
- Check your status first — see our status check guide. “Approved” with a future date means wait; “Pending” or “Referred” means verification isn’t finished
- Give it until the next morning. There is no set time of day — banks process grant batches throughout the day, so money can land early morning or late evening on the payment date
- Confirm your banking details on the portal. Outdated or mismatched details are the most common cause of returned payments, and fixes take one to two payment cycles
- Check the calendar — weekend and holiday shifts, plus SRD’s late-month window, explain most “missing” payments
- Call 0800 60 10 11 if a confirmed pay date has passed with nothing received
⚠️ Scam warning
Never pay anyone who promises to “release” or “unlock” your payment. That service does not exist — it is simply theft. SASSA will never ask for a fee, your card PIN, or an OTP, and no one can move your payment up the queue.
Be equally wary of SMSes announcing payment dates that differ from the official schedule, and of anyone offering to change your banking details for you. Verify dates on sassa.gov.za and report fraud on 0800 60 10 11.

FAQ
Do all grants pay on the 1st?
No. Older Person’s pays first, then Disability, then Children’s — across the first three business days. A fourth day covers beneficiaries flagged for review. SRD pays in the last week of the month.
Will my child support grant come on the same day as my old age grant?
No — they’re paid on different days even when both go to the same person. The old age grant comes first and children’s grants follow two days later.
What time of day does SASSA pay?
There’s no set time. Banks process the batches through the day, so money can arrive early in the morning or late in the evening. Check again the next morning before reporting it missing.
Why did my neighbour get SRD before me?
SRD releases in batches across the window. Different days are normal and don’t indicate a problem.
Is money lost if I don’t withdraw on payday?
No. The money stays in your account and rolls over — SASSA does not take it back. Withdrawing later avoids queues and first-day ATM pressure.
