Your First Google Ads Campaign: A No-Waste Starter Guide

The short answer: A first Google Ads campaign that doesn’t burn money follows six rules — start with Search ads only (people actively looking, not browsing), one tightly-themed campaign around your single best money keyword, exact and phrase match keywords rather than broad match, a real negative-keyword list from day one, location targeting matched to where you actually serve, and a landing page that continues the ad’s promise instead of your homepage. Budget honestly: a campaign that can’t generate around a hundred clicks a month in your niche won’t teach you anything, and a starved campaign is worse than no campaign.

Learn: how not to donate money to Google

Google Ads works — South African businesses profitably buy customers with it every day. It will also happily spend any budget badly if you accept the defaults, and the defaults are the enemy. Here’s what they don’t foreground:

Search first, everything else later

Search ads appear when someone types your money phrase — that’s intent you can’t buy anywhere else. Display banners and automated campaign types spray budget across the internet. They have their uses, but not for your first few thousand rand.

Match types decide everything

Broad match lets Google show your “security gates Roodepoort” ad against loosely related searches of its own choosing. On a small budget that’s a leak, not reach. Start with exact match and phrase match, and expand only when your data justifies it.

Negative keywords are half the skill

Every niche has budget-eating searches. Add “free”, “jobs”, “vacancies”, “courses”, “how to make”, “second hand”, competitor names you don’t want, and areas you don’t serve — before launch, then weekly from the Search Terms report. That report is the single most valuable screen in Google Ads, because it shows the actual searches that triggered your ads rather than the keywords you thought you were buying.

The landing page is half the result

If the ad promises “Security gates installed in 5 days — Roodepoort”, the click must land on a page saying exactly that, with price guidance, proof (photos, reviews) and one obvious action. Sending paid clicks to a generic homepage is the most common way South African small businesses waste ad money.

Conversion tracking, or you’re flying blind

Before spending a rand, set up conversion tracking for the action that actually matters — a purchase, a form, a call button. Without it you’ll judge the campaign on clicks. Clicks are what Google sells; conversions are what you need.

The economics, honestly

You pay per click, and cost per click varies enormously by niche — a few rand in some markets, far more in competitive professional and financial ones. The maths that decides everything:

Clicks needed per sale × cost per click must be less than profit per sale.

Run that before launching, not after. If your product profits R80 a sale, most Search niches can’t work for you. If it profits R800, many can. No amount of campaign optimisation fixes unit economics that don’t work.

Do: launch the no-waste starter campaign

  1. Pick one offer — your best-margin, most-searched product or service
  2. Build its landing page to the standard above: promise-matched, proof, one action
  3. Set up conversion tracking — Google’s guided setup plus your platform’s plugin handles this without code
  4. Create one Search campaign. Location set to your real service area, and switch off the Display Network and Search Partners in settings — both default to on and both leak budget
  5. One ad group, five to fifteen keywords in exact and phrase match around a single theme
  6. Load your negative keywords before launch
  7. Write two or three ads: the keyword in the headline, your differentiator, the action. Use all the headline and description slots Google offers
  8. Bidding: start on manual CPC or maximise clicks with a bid ceiling. Graduate to conversion-based bidding only once you have real conversion data to feed it
  9. The weekly 20-minute ritual: open the Search Terms report, add negatives, pause keywords spending without converting, shift budget toward what’s working. This ritual is Google Ads management — agencies charge retainers for exactly this
  10. Judge at 30 days on cost per conversion against your profit maths. Not impressions, not clicks, not “brand awareness”

⚠️ Scam warning

Fake “Google” callers threatening your listing or promising guaranteed top spots. Google does not cold-call small businesses, and nobody can guarantee a position. This is among the most common scams aimed at South African businesses.

Agencies that won’t give you admin access to your own ads account. You must own the account and the data — always, without exception. If the relationship ends and you lose your entire campaign history, you were renting your own marketing. Long lock-in contracts paired with withheld access is the pattern to walk away from.

A legitimate manager gives you account ownership, walks you through the Search Terms report in reviews, and reports cost per conversion rather than click volume.

FAQ

How much should a small SA business spend on Google Ads?

Enough to generate around a hundred clicks a month in your niche, or you can’t learn anything from the data. Work backwards from your niche’s cost per click to find that number. If the budget isn’t there yet, spend nothing and do SEO and email instead — a starved campaign teaches nothing and costs real money.

Google Ads or Facebook and Instagram ads?

Google Search captures existing demand — someone needs it now. Meta creates demand through interruption and targeting. If you sell something people already search for, start with Google. If it’s impulse, visual or genuinely new, start with Meta. Mature businesses run both.

How long before ads are profitable?

The first few weeks buy data, not profit. Profitability comes from the weekly ritual acting on that data — and never arrives at all if the unit economics are broken.

Should I bid on my own brand name?

If competitors are bidding on it, yes — it’s cheap defence. If not, usually unnecessary while budgets are small.

Can I do this myself or do I need an agency?

A single Search campaign following this checklist is absolutely DIY. Multiple campaigns, Shopping feeds, or substantial monthly spend is where professional management typically pays for itself.
